FAQs

Car Insurance Thailand

Choosing the right car insurance in Thailand can be confusing, especially with terms like “1st party,” “2nd party,” and “3rd party” thrown around. Here’s a breakdown to help you navigate these options and select the coverage that best suits your needs

Comprehensive Coverage: 1st Party Insurance (Type 1)

  • Complete Protection: 1st party insurance, also known as Type 1 insurance in Thailand, offers the most comprehensive coverage. It combines the benefits of TPL and 2nd party insurance, providing protection for:
    • Third-party Bodily Injury and Property Damage: Similar to TPL, it covers injuries and damages caused to others in an accident you cause.

Your Own Vehicle: 1st party insurance covers repairs or replacements for your car in a wider range of situations, including collisions (even with unidentified vehicles), fire, theft, natural disasters, and even vandalism.

  • Balancing Protection and Cost: 2nd Party Insurance (2+ and 3+)
      • A Step Up from Basic: 2nd party insurance offers additional coverage compared to just TPL. Depending on the specific plan (2+ or 3+), it can cover repairs to your own vehicle in certain situations:
        • 2+ Insurance: Typically covers repairs to your car if it’s damaged in a collision with another identified vehicle.
        • 3+ Insurance: Similar to 2+ insurance, but it might additionally cover fire and theft of your car.
      • Things to Consider: While 2nd party insurance provides some protection for your car, it’s important to understand the limitations. Not all accident scenarios are covered, and payout limits can vary.

  • Mandatory Protection: 3rd Party Liability (TPL)
        • What it covers: This is the most basic and legally required car insurance in Thailand. It protects others involved in an accident you cause, covering their bodily injury and property damage.
        • What it doesn’t cover: Unfortunately, 3rd party liability (TPL) does not cover any repairs or replacements for your own vehicle if it’s damaged in an accident, regardless of fault.
  • A: First-class car insurance often allows you to choose dealer coverage (repairs at authorized dealerships) or garage coverage (repairs at approved garages). Dealer coverage is typically more expensive.
  • A: Yes. First-class (comprehensive) car insurance will tow your car to your preferred garage or dealership after an accident (excluding roadside assistance).
  • A: Yes, with immediate coverage. If your policy starts today and payment is complete, you’re covered for accidents immediately.
  • A: Yes. All Thai insurance companies are required to offer a 24/7 emergency hotline.
  • A: We recommend first-class (comprehensive) insurance for maximum coverage. However, second party (2+ & 3+) offers partial coverage for your car, and third-party is the minimum legal requirement.
  • A: You’ll receive two sets of documents:
    • PDF documents (1-2 days): Sent via LINE or email for immediate use as a temporary policy.
    • Original documents (7-14 working days): Mailed to your specified address. Your coverage is active regardless, and you can use the emergency hotline.
